Well, it was the first event of 2011 for me, and the sun was splitting the trees - Actually a bit too warm for my liking if you can ever have such a thing.
All competitors were given the map before the start of the event, and got the hints/point values as they clocked out at the start. This was the other way round to the other SMBO events i've done in the past, and threw me a bit, as i like to plan my route based on the point values.
I set off, feeling confident of a good result from Curry Rugby Club, and immediately realised i was on the wrong road out of the town. Not to worry, a quick change to my proposed route, and i was back on course.
After about 30 mins, i had to stop and take off my base layer because of the heat. It really was that warm! It was then that i realise i had not started my stop-watch at the start line, so i was judging the remaining time of my 3 hours for the rest of the morning.
With about 1 hour to go, i decided to head back towards the finish line, and pick up some points i'd left along the way.
While climbing one of the steeper ascents, my chain broke. Fortunately, i had the tool and a power-link to fix it, so i only lost about 5 mins.
My estimation of my time was not too bad, returning after 02:50:37, with 220 points and no penalties, giving me a position of 23/34 in the male solo section.
I'm happy with that.
In the female solo catagory, my friend Toni finished 8/11with 190 points - being almost 20 mins late back cost her 90 points, and probably a top 3 finish
In the Mixed team catagory, my friends Keith and Lynne finished a very respectable 2/7 with 263 points, missing the top step of the podium by 5 points.

Cheers to Walter for the photographs
